Description

Why So Sad? Dunk Low Premium

Nike SB join hands with John Rattray’s Why So Sad? mission for a project intended to get the skateboard community talking - Introducing the Why So Sad? Dunk Low Premium in a Coastal Blue / Light Blue colourway.

Why So Sad? arose as a subsidiary project to another of John’s endeavours, his blog, The Predatory Bird, and is a response to the internal troubles we all deal with on the daily. Initially a reaction to his sister taking her own life in 2011 and John’s own lifelong struggles with depression, Why So Sad? is less a company and more a platform for discussion.

Aiming to break the taboos surrounding mental health-centric discourse with a light-hearted and accepting approach, Why So Sad? is starting with the skateboarding community and using its ironic infatuation with melodramatic trick names like the melancholy grab, sad plant, and mayday grind to get the conversation started.

The root of the Why So Sad? collaboration involves messages of being totally transparent and open with our feelings, so it’s appropriate that the coinciding Dunk sits upon a translucent outsole - a crisp white midsole peeks through, giving the base of the shoe a clean, icy aesthetic. Donning the iconic Dunk tread, the Why So Sad? Dunk offers tenacious traction and points towards the skate-ready durability fluent with the rest of the shoe.

The upper blends smooth and soft beryl nubuck panelling with velvety sapphire suede overlays - fitting hues and an ever-present reminder to speak up when you’re feeling blue. The tongue is crafted from a softly texturized canvas, rounding out a trifecta of delicate-yet-durable materials found on the main body of the shoe. Meanwhile, the iconic Swoosh hugs both the lateral and medial sides, dressed in navy leather and underscored by vibrant yellow detailing.

Nike’s dependable Zoom Air insole graces the footbed, featuring custom Why So Sad? artwork by Jon Horner and reminiscent of Rattray and Horner’s collaborative comic strip from the pages of Thrasher Magazine, The Predatory Bird. The insole pairs perfectly with mesh cushioning at the heel and padding upon the tongue, teasing the supportive comfort and soothing breathability promised by every Dunk.

Horner’s influence can be found throughout the shoe, with intricate embroidery nestling at the lateral heel of each shoe. The right features a skateboarding gull, whilst the left represents Rattray’s 100-mile cycle trip in aid of suicide prevention in 2017 and depicts a matching gull on a bike. Further embroidered embellishments can be found on the rouged suede heel tabs, where lemony yellow question marks seemingly leap from the shoe and pose the question, “Why So Sad?”
