Skate Like A Girl is a non-profit organisation promoting inclusivity, social equity, and self-confidence amongst skateboarding’s most underrepresented demographics, namely young women and the trans community. More than that, it’s an open crew of likeminded individuals creating space for everybody in skateboarding, stripping back the social biases, stigma, and sexism often cultivated in skate circles and shining light on the true spirit of skateboarding – pure, unashamed fun.
The importance and distant reach of organisations like Skate Like A Girl is evident in the growing diversity amongst the skateboarding community, symbolic of a shift in attitudes to what constitutes a “real” skateboarder and a safer landscape that everybody can enjoy. Skate Like A Girl spread their message passively through encouraging on and off board trick tip videos, and more publicly with fundraisers and events like “Wheels of Fortune”, an annual global gathering of women and trans skaters celebrating individuality.
Wheels of Fortune provides the inspiration for Skate Like A Girl’s Nike SB Dunk Low, a vintage “homecoming”-style kick that isn’t trying to be too cool or flashy – a universally appealing aesthetic that looks just as good on the older generation as it does on the feet of a teenage skateboarder; clean, functional, and unifying, Skate Like A Girl intend for their Dunks to be skated and appreciated, using durable materials to create a lasting shoe that has purpose and is relatable for everyone.
The upper sits upon a classic gum outsole and is lightly dusted with creamy Bone suede, whilst circular vents pepper the toe box for all-day breathability. Juicy Beetroot suede panelling caresses it, gushing with softness, comfort, and a ripened aesthetic. Delicate logo embroidery flirts with the heel panelling as rich Crimson corduroy Swooshes cascade along the side panels, contrasting the shoe. The tongue has a deconstructed look, familiar with fans of the Nike Blazer, and is also formed from plush, cushioning corduroy, culminating with custom labelling presenting an upside-down logo – reflective of Skate Like A Girl’s progressive upending of skateboarding culture.
