Product Description

With the 20th anniversary year of the SB Dunk ending soon, Nike SB list their final Dunk for the year – and it’s a big one. The ‘Sandy’ Dunk Low OG ascends from a history filled with myth and mystery whilst offering something entirely new, a homage to the heritage of the Nike SB Dunk and the lore of the late Alexander “Sandy” Bodecker, in honour of the tireless work he put in to establish Nike SB’s credibility within the skateboard industry and his relentless charitable commitment to giving back.

The story opens in 1997, preluding Nike SB by five years as Nike attempt to enter skateboarding for a first time, spawning a series of alienating skate shoe designs and marketing gimmicks that rightly saw them ejected from the scene. Following this less-than-fruitful first attempt, Nike took defeat in their stride, realising that if they were to crack this culture so enthused with gatekeeping tradition, they would have to offer skateboarders a legitimate alternative to the established core brands. Sandy Bodecker already had quite a name at Nike, progressing from product tester in the ‘80s to an integral component of the growth of Nike’s football programme. His conscientious approach meant he was the perfect fit to help Nike permeate skateboarding culture, quickly absorbing himself in magazines, videos, and conversations with the excitable energy of a child experiencing skateboarding for the first time. Sandy understood that to earn the respect of skateboarders, Nike’s influence had to be organic and give back to the community and so an entirely new entity was born, Nike SB. The brand launched with a shoe that had already established itself as serviceable skate footwear thanks to its robust design, tight aesthetic, and grippy outsole – the Dunk. Since 2002, Nike SB and the SB Dunk have snowballed in popularity and, despite opposition and his passing in 2018, Nike SB continue to fulfil Sandy’s promise to skateboarding by giving back to the community wherever possible.

The Nike SB ‘Sandy’ Dunk Low OG calls back to the fabled eBay Charity Dunk, a two-of-a-kind shoe that was sold at auction in 2003 for $30,000 to benefit a skatepark in Nike SB’s home of Portland, Oregon. The second pair was destroyed with a handsaw to maintain the auction’s prestige, and the bid winner’s identity remained unconfirmed until recently when it was revealed that the owner of the original eBay kicks was none other than Sandy Bodecker. The 2022 model adopts the construction of the original, emphasising the story behind the shoe by separating the classic patent leather upper into sections with translucent rubber windows and creating a unique, deconstructed aesthetic, complete with fraying at the stitching. The look is punctuated by the familiar yellow, green, red, and blue of the eBay logo found throughout the overlays, upstanding against the cool white leather panelling for a glossy, synthetic look invoking early-2000’s style. The lower of the shoe mimics the split upper with translucent elements intersecting the red and white of the opaque outsole and midsole. Destruction is synonymous with this silhouette, and this is certainly a shoe that has been built to skate, with its hardwearing craftsmanship and reinforced stitching. Inside, custom photograph insoles pay their respects to the man who may as well have “put the SB in Nike SB” and commemorate the original eBay Charity Dunk.
