As the pair of streetwear-defining institutes share their 20th anniversaries in 2022, Nike SB and HUF renew their vows with a duo of Dunks - a leg-ending love letter to the life and times of the late, great Keith Hufnagel. The second marriage between the two proves just as prolific as the first, building on a footwear foundation formed with 2004’s Bay-Area exclusive Tie-Dye HUF Dunk High Pro SB and the HUF x Air Max 1, profoundly referencing the couple’s ongoing intertwinement and Keith’s lasting legacy throughout.
The two different colourways of the HUF x Nike SB Dunk Low are reflective of the two cities that defined Keith – New York City, his birthplace; and San Francisco, where he attended university for a semester before dropping out to pursue professional skateboarding. The NYC version of the shoe takes from the blue and white of the New York Yankees, whilst the SFC alternative borrows the orange, white, and black colour scheme of the San Francisco Giants. At surface level each shoe has a tastefully refined look, with two-tone leather panelling providing a classic aesthetic and resilient durability, evocative of Keith’s raw power and natural style on the board. Dig a little deeper and the tough leather sidewalls give way to vibrant tie-dye canvas sections reminiscent of the aforementioned 2004 HUF Dunk, inspired by SF’s colourful culture - the perfect way to personalise your Dunks, with the same creative spirit that encouraged the opening of the first HUF store in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighbourhood in 2002.
The shoe’s toe box presents a direct embodiment of the pair’s mutual entanglement, as the toe perforations have been repatterned to accommodate a unique, characterising feature: a chrome Nike Jewel Swoosh ornament sits proudly over a bold print of the original, impactful HUF logo. Further exclusive detailing sits subtly at the rear, the skyline of each respective city assembled at the heel tab, using Nike’s reflective Hyperfuse material more commonly used in their lifestyle models, such as the Air Max 90. Above this, “Keith Forever” is touchingly spelled out across the heel tabs in embroidered fonts inspired by the chosen team of each city, perhaps the most forthright reference to Huf. Inside the shoe, custom green insoles display the silhouette of Bones, Keith’s beloved dog and a recognisable symbol of the early days of HUF.
On the topic of silhouettes, the HUF x Nike SB Dunk Low gets the extra special honour of using a last from the first days of the SB Dunk, a rare opportunity only afforded to the companies who collaborated with Nike SB right at the very beginning. The shoe is finished with a nylon tongue, harking back to the original Dunk and Air Jordan models that were adopted by skateboarders during the period that Huf grew up skating.
The HUF x Nike SB Dunk Low arrives in both a Black / Vast Grey / White and
White / Vast Grey / Midnight Navy colourway, within a randomised ‘blind bag’
that adds to the excitement. Alongside these two stock colourways is a third,
ultra-rare, grey and green model – the Wait... What!? HUF Dunk Low, which takes
influence from the Friends and Family HUF Air Max 1.
