With graffiti and footwear mutually embedded in street culture, Nike SB have an extensive history of collaboration with some of urban painting’s most illustrious pioneers. Tagging with New York-raised graffiti artist FUTURA, the latest lick of paint applied to their iconic Dunk Low silhouette brings vibrant colours and abstract aesthetics.
Since the ‘70s, FUTURA’s style has stood apart from the pack: whilst his peers practiced in punchy lettering, FUTURA focussed primarily on abstract interpretations and became known for his intricate linework, pressing ahead in the legitimisation of “street art” as a valid artistic medium and more than just a public nuisance.
Transcending the moniker “graffiti artist”, FUTURA is a visionary, exemplified by his design studio and lifestyle brand, FUTURA LABORATORIES. Previously working alongside Supreme, Levi’s, BAPE, and even producing album artwork for The Clash back in the ‘80s, FUTURA’s new venture with Nike SB is the latest in a series of collaborations, each overwhelmed with his unique artistic influence.
Thrown up over a soft and breathable foundation, the FUTURA Dunk offers a lesser-used emulsion of canvas and mesh to achieve its stark look. Contrasting cloudy white walls with its bold, spray effect panelling topped with oozing, gradient laces, the shoe makes for a wearable mural, a powerful piece to exaggerate any fit.
Further FUTURA detailing can be found throughout the silhouette, with a blueish, translucent outsole underfoot revealing a slick signature, custom Zoom Air insoles, and heavy rubberised detailing marking the lateral and medial sides of the heel panel.
