History-making, colour line breaking, line-drive hitting, and former Nike Dunk recipient Jackie Robinson once said, “baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he’s losing; nobody wants you to quit when you’re ahead,” and Nike SB are certainly ahead with their next inning, a clean colouration influenced by Robinson’s own team, the Dodgers.
The Dodgers spent their inaugural 68 seasons in Brooklyn, setting alight a fierce rivalry with cross-town competitors the New York Yankees and establishing themselves as a dominant force in the MLB, before relocating cross-country to Los Angeles preceding the 1958 season. Despite trading coasts, the Dodgers’ uniform and colours have remained comparatively constant, sticking with the unmistakeably crisp white and royal blue of their home strip since the ‘30s.
The Dodgers Dunk Low dons the serene deep blue, playing softball with supple suede overlays on offence, tumbling over icy white leather panelling at the toe box, side panels, and heel, and is kept breathable enough for base running with a mesh tongue and toe box perforations; the swoosh mimics the mesh, curve balling across the shoe in matching royal blue to emphasise the athletic aesthetic and is finished with virgule-style baseball edge stitching. Red ‘NIKE’ embroidery at the heel tab matches lettering upon the tongue label, adding another dimension of detail and imitating the third and final Dodgers home kit colour.
Bottom of the inning, the Dodgers Dunk Low features a baseball white midsole standing on a gum base; a baby pink smear towards the heel is reminiscent of the ‘Bubblegum’ Air Jordan 1, a nod towards the stereotype of baseball players relentlessly chewing gum in the dugout. Finally, Nike SB hit home with custom cartoon iconography hidden behind the tongue, a Los Angeles palm tree at left field and the welcoming Dodgers Stadium sign to the right.
