Nike SB 'Crushed' Dunk Low Pro QS Skate Shoes
Raffle Ends In
Crushed Dunk
Nike SB and Crushed Skate Shop capture the essence of Pulaski Park and
skateboarding in Washington D.C. with a Dunk Low dressed in earthy autumnal
colours.
Standing on the shoulders of giants, Crushed is steeped in history. Residing in
the same unit as its predecessors Art Under Pressure and Bureau, just down the
street from Palace 5ive’s original spot, and within skating distance of the city’s
best skateable terrain, Crushed takes on the mantle of Washington D.C.’s
premiere skate store. An interminable figure of D.C.’s skateboarding scene, Brian
Aguilar held tenure at both AUP and Bureau before taking it upon himself to steer
the ship in a new direction in 2020 under the new name, Crushed Skate Shop.
Crushed serves not only to provide the best retail experience, but to organically
connect skateboarders young and old, too. This commitment to community is
clear in Crushed’s deep entrenchment with Freedom Plaza, known to the locals
as Pulaski Park, the heart of the Capital City’s skate scene. With the loss of
Philadelphia’s Love Park in 2016, Pulaski represents an endangered species – the
last great American plazas, tangible time capsules into the annals of
skateboarding’s golden era and a foundation for future generations.
Nike SB celebrate Crushed and highlight the importance of Pulaski with a Dunk
Low colourway that embodies the colours that form the park. The upper is
crafted from a tough and glossy, olive grey, tumbled leather upper, resembling
the smooth marble paving of the plaza and accentuated by regimented detailing
at the tongue – intricate, cut-out diamond patterning rests beneath a taut and
silky mesh. The outer panelling of the shoe is encompassed by velvety chocolate
suede panelling, criss-crossing across the leather like Freedom Plaza’s world-
famous patterned flooring.
Marbleised “Mantra” orange swooshes glide across the lateral and medial sides
of the shoe, matching a speckled Nike Grind outsole and mimicking the golden
hour sunlight as it dances upon Pulaski’s iconic granite ledges. The orange
theme furthers as supple padding plunges into the footbed and frolics along the
tongue lining, whilst Crushed insoles rooted deeply in the shoe solidify the shop’s
centric correlation to the spot. The Crushed Dunk Low is finished with a selection
of three laces, for your perfect look.
The end result is a shoe that perfectly encapsulates the diverse urban furniture
of a culturally rich spot, in a colourway that respects its root material but retains
the wearability and classic aesthetic of the Nike SB Dunk Low: A coming together
of two icons of skateboarding. A mainstay of skate videos and, more importantly,
an inclusive space connecting the skateboarding community, Pulaski has been a
lasting symbol starkly contrasting Washington D.C.’s turbulent political culture.
Sign Crushed’s petition resisting the renovation of Pulaski Park here, and protect
skateboarding heritage.
