Following a turbulent upbringing in Venice, Spanto’s vision for the brand came to him whilst serving time in supermax prison. Recognising a cultural shift on the streets where he grew up, Spanto saw value in subverting the gentrification of the landscape and sustaining the spirit of the LA that raised him. With no prior experience within the realm of streetwear, Printup maintained an overtly self-critical approach to his work until his untimely passing, constantly questioning his ability to run the brand. Born X Raised’s continued success refutes Spanto’s self-judgement, justifying the brand’s existence, and its “from the ground up” ethos is reflected in the craftsmanship of their new Dunk colourway alongside Nike SB.
Born X Raised truly make the shoe their own, overhauling many of the design elements of the traditional SB Dunk with ideas that take the silhouette to new heights whilst simultaneously staying true to the shoe’s foundations. Smoothed blue suede panelling hugs a white, full-grain leather upper, presenting a classic colourway for Born X Raised to build on. Intricate paisley-style perforations make the toe box pop, crowning tight embroidery protracting along the toe cap in a recognisably West Coast typeface; further embroidery can be found on the lateral heels of each shoe. A lenticular Swoosh extends from matching heel tabs and glosses across the face of the Dunk, infusing radiant colour and a uniquely dynamic design, and mimicking the translucence of the custom outsole. Three versatile lace options offer a touch of personalisation, and custom insoles bearing images of the iconic Venice pavilion finish the sneaker.
