Despite Shanghai’s fervent futurism, the Nike SB x Fly Streetwear Dunk Low QS “Gardenia” looks backwards, inspired by traditional Chinese street culture and “The Fragrance of Shanghai”. A subversive response to an expensive perfume industry that outpriced common people, Shanghai’s street vendors began selling scented flowers like the white jade orchid and gardenia, binding them with a steel wire as an affordable alternative to commercialised fragrances.
