Mountains form as two tectonic plates are pushed against one another; a process called orogeny.

Shanghai represents an artificial symbol of orogeny, the man-manufactured crest forged from a duality of culture as East absorbs West, breathing in intercontinental ideas and exhaling its avant-garde “Shanghai style”. This is known as “Haipai” culture, a term coined early in the 20th century as a criticism of the city, but ultimately a contributing factor to Shanghai’s unfading flowering into one of the most developed cities in the world. Towering structures and neon-slathered streets suggest Shanghai is forever striving skyward but, below the city’s skyline, at surface level, its storied heritage is ever-present and eternal.

An analogous embrace of East and West has made fruition in the form of a partnership between Nike SB and Fly Streetwear, a union on a smaller stage but of no less significance to Shanghai’s skateboarding scene. Fly was founded in 1999 by Jeff Han, revered as the “Godfather of Chinese Skateboarding”, the flint and steel that sparked the skateboarding movement in Shanghai and cultivated its landscape for the current crop of street skaters, all from his hub at 704 Chang Le Road. Recognising Han’s contribution and spurred by Shanghai’s history, Nike SB combine with Fly Streetwear for their latest Dunk Low Pro.

Despite Shanghai’s fervent futurism, the Nike SB x Fly Streetwear Dunk Low QS “Gardenia” looks backwards, inspired by traditional Chinese street culture and “The Fragrance of Shanghai”. A subversive response to an expensive perfume industry that outpriced common people, Shanghai’s street vendors began selling scented flowers like the white jade orchid and gardenia, binding them with a steel wire as an affordable alternative to commercialised fragrances. This self-sufficient determination is synonymous with skateboarding, a link so significant it is celebrated in the Dunk’s ornate design.

The shoe is comprised of a lustrous leather upper of Grey Fog, shawled in softly textured Game Royal suede panelling evocative of the decorative baskets used by Shanghai’s street florists. An icy cool outsole shelters below a creamy Sail midsole, which, in turn, colour matches the Dunk’s intricate Swoosh, composed with a unique and flamboyantly intricate staggered aesthetic – interlaced stitches create a feathered effect, whilst a metallic embellishment towards the rear emphasises the connection to the aromatic floral bundles. Green suede heel tabs elicit images of botanic stalks, elaborate Chinese calligraphy cradles in the footbed, and the shoe is finished fastened with crafty rope laces.

Conceptually meticulous, the Dunk Low QS “Gardenia” Game Royal/Sail-Grey Fog is the intricate outcome of the orogeny between Fly Streetwear and Nike SB.
